This library is all about wind moving through shapes.

Instead of capturing clean air movement, we recorded wind interacting with carefully chosen objects and structures, either placing objects near the microphones or positioning the recording rig close to resonant forms, letting the wind break, whistle, and resonate through different shapes and materials.

In collaboration with Olof Johnsson, a professional voice artist known for his work in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies,” we have captured an incredible range of realistic creature sounds. Olof’s mesmerizing performance left us in awe, and we believe he possesses some kind of magical vocal transformation effect within his vocal chords.
In addition to Olofs exceptional performances, we ventured further by recording our own vocal endeavors, along with the assistance of a death metal singer, supportive friends, and even family members.

How it started

When I recorded Gusty Wind in Norway, something happened I never forgot. I was standing in a moon like landscape of ice and snow.
The wind was intense and very loud.
Then, all of a sudden, it was silent.
It dropped from violent force to almost nothing.
Looking around, I realized I had simply stepped behind a small Hill. Behind it the wind was not hearable. Two steps back, and I was in the loud storm again.
That moment stayed with me. Out there, nothing really broke the wind except myself. I started looking for objects that could shape it. Back then, I decided that one day I would return to a place like this and bring my own shapes, objects that could make the wind sing.

The recording

I loaded a camper with recording equipment and all kinds of materials, then drove to the Shetland Islands, one of the windiest regions in Europe, a remote place with a lot of wind and very few people. The camper was completely packed: microphones, gear, and a strange collection of objects, from long pipes and hoses to different kinds of wire, cloth, foils, and anything else that looked promising. No space was left. (I slept in the rooftop tent on top of the camper.)
Allthough the camper was cramped, I also found some of the shapes on location. (Like metal gates and metal towers)

The ingredients

We experimented with a wide range of objects and resonators,
each one bending the wind into a completely different voice:
– kitchen sieves and grates
– harmonicas and recorders
– plastic pipes and tubes
– wire mesh and chicken wire
– flags, fabric, plastic bags and thin foils
– cans, metal profiles and metal pipes
